The Container: Holding and Releasing Stress Safely
Why We Need a Container
When emotions or stress feel overwhelming, having a safe way to “hold” them can be helpful without being consumed. I often use container practices with clients in Bellingham and virtually across Washington, as a way to manage overwhelming thoughts or feelings.
What Is the Container Technique?
The Container is a guided visualization where you imagine setting aside what feels too heavy to carry in the moment. This doesn’t erase or deny the issue—it simply gives you control over when and how you engage with it.
How It Helps
By practicing the Container, you strengthen your ability to regulate stress. Instead of being caught in a spiral, you can set challenges aside, knowing you can return to them when you feel resourced and ready.
Bringing It Into Daily Life
Use the Container when you’re about to head into work, winding down at night, or anytime you need relief from looping thoughts. It’s a powerful way to create breathing room while still honoring your emotions.
