What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Starting therapy can feel vulnerable.
You may wonder:
Will I know what to say?
What if I get emotional?
Will it feel awkward?
These questions are completely normal.
Whether you’re coming in for anxiety therapy in Bellingham or meeting online from elsewhere in Washington State, the first session is designed to feel supportive and steady.
The First Session Is a Conversation
Your first therapy session is not a test.
It’s a conversation.
We’ll talk about:
• What’s bringing you in
• What you’ve been experiencing
• Your goals for therapy
• Any relevant history
• What support might look like moving forward
You don’t need to have everything organized or explained perfectly.
You can start exactly where you are.
You Set the Pace
Some people dive in quickly.
Others move more gradually.
There is no “right” speed.
If you feel nervous, that’s okay.
If you feel relief, that’s okay too.
Therapy is collaborative. We move at a pace that feels safe for you.
We May Discuss Treatment Options
Depending on what you’re seeking support for, we may talk about different approaches.
For example:
• Anxiety therapy
• Trauma therapy
• EMDR therapy
• Life transitions counseling
If EMDR therapy in Bellingham is appropriate, we would first build grounding and regulation skills before moving into deeper processing.
In-Person or Online
Sessions are available in-person in Bellingham, WA, or through secure online therapy throughout Washington State.
Many clients find online therapy just as effective as in-person sessions.
What You Don’t Have to Do
You don’t have to:
• Tell your entire life story immediately
• Justify why you need support
• Have everything figured out
Therapy is a space for clarity, not performance.
Closing
If you’ve been considering reaching out but feel unsure, that hesitation is understandable.
Starting therapy is a meaningful step.
