The Container: Learning to Work with Activation
What is the Container?
The Container exercise is a way to identify and isolate activated neural networks—your body’s warning system. If your body enters threat response mode, you’re no longer able to work effectively in therapy (or other settings). Being able to intentionally “set aside” your body’s threat response helps you maintain awareness that you are “safe right now.” I share this practice as one of many key tools in anxiety therapy, trauma therapy, and EMDR work with clients in Bellingham and virtually across Washington.
What Is the Container Technique?
The Container is a guided visualization that helps you identify activated energy, and safely set it aside. This does not erase or deny the message from your body—it simply gives you control over when and how you engage with it. Creating a visual symbol of a container sends reassuring messages to your neural system through the powerful visual cortex.
In trauma therapy and EMDR preparation, this technique builds internal regulation and emotional safety before deeper processing work begins.
How It Helps
By practicing the Container, you strengthen your ability to regulate stress. You learn to recognize warnings from your body, and discern whether they need attending to in the moment. If the issue can wait, or if it is part of a PTSD response, the Container helps your body return to a feeling of safety. It increases your self-awareness and feelings of confidence and composure.
This technique is especially helpful for individuals experiencing anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or trauma-related overwhelm.
Bringing It Into Daily Life
Try using the Container after a stressful encounter, to help wind down at night, or when you feel anxious without knowing why. It’s a powerful way to create breathing room while still honoring your emotions.

This guided audio helps you practice setting aside activated thoughts and feelings, strengthening your ability to regulate stress and find relief. It is most effective after learning the technique within a counseling session for maximum support and integration.
